who are in grades 4-6. A minimum of two adults lead each
troop. Junior Girl Scouts earn recognitions called
"Proficiency Badges" as well as other leadership awards.
A "Proficiency Badge" is earned by completing a minimum
number of requirements and demonstrating proficiency in that
particular area. Girls earn these recognitions in many
areas, including: computers, photography, the arts, ecology,
outdoor activities, and sports.
Girls participate in community service projects, use a
form of democratic government called "patrols," and elect
leaders within their group who represent their interests at
a "Court of Honor." Junior Girl Scouts make shared decisions
with adults and learn to keep track of troop finances and
travel more than Brownie Girl Scouts.
Their adventures may take
them close to home or on out-of-town trips to such places as
the Juliette Gordon Low birthplace in Savannah, Georgia or
Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. Junior Girl Scouts
participate in the annual cookie sale, calendar sale and
sometimes a special troop
fund-raising project. These funds support troop activities.
